After listening to David Foster Wallace’s speech “This is Water” I came up with this idea of a fishbowl stuck on a person’s head as a metaphor for personal perception. The person’s discovery of the fishbowl throughout the book was supposed to be a metaphor for self-awareness or consciousness. I had a lot of rich conversations with friends about the first times they had memories of recognizing their own thoughts and consciousness, which inspired a lot of the narratives here.
